While the Summer brought Lifelock problems with a rush of law suits, it seems things have calmed down and the company continues to grow it’s long list of happy customers.
In truth, the so called Lifelock.com scam and other problems didn’t even cause the company to break stride and the Lifelock remains far and away the leader in identity theft protection despite several pretenders hoping to step in their shoes if the problems had proved to be chronic.
The Lifelock Problems
Back in May stories started to break about class action lawsuits by Lifelock customers unhappy with the advertising campaign. It turned out most of the noise was being made by Gerald Marks, an Attorney who claimed the Lifelock advertising was misleading because CEO Todd Davis, who gives out his Social Security Number as proof Lifelock works, had a $500 payday loan taken out in his name.
The news made a good story for a few days until it was shown that actually Lifelock had worked in protecting Davis. His credit score remained immaculate and the guy who took out the loan was caught. It also came to light that the only reason he was able to take out the loan in the first place was because the loan company had failed to check with Davis despite there being a flag on his credit file.
Other Lifelock problems over the Summer included a major fall out with Experian, the credit agency. Experian claimed Lifelock was being unfair to their customers as placing a fraud alert can be done by anyone for free yet it’s a major part of the service provided by Lifelock.
Again, this made news until it became clear Experian simply wanted Lifelock to stop placing fraud alerts on behalf of their customers because it caused extra work for Experian. They were also unhappy Lifelock remove customers from mailing lists and guess who sells financial information for mailing lists?
The Lifelock problems have yet to go away and court cases are pending but they should be seen for what they are and certainly should not put you off using what is an excellent service that has been proved to be the most effective in identity theft prevention.
3% of Americans were victims of identity theft last year according to Government figures so with over a million customers Lifelock would expect 30 000 of it’s members to be victims of identity theft this year if they weren’t being protected yet the actual number looks unlikely to reach 3 figures!
